CALL FOR ACTION OVER PARKING NEAR TORBAY HOSPITAL

2.26.41pm GMT Thu 18th Mar 2010

Shiphay with the Willows Councillor Colin Charlwood has tabled a question for the next Full Council meeting (on Thursday March 25th) calling for more action to help local residents who live near the hospital.

Local residents in the area are plagued by parking problems, and a planned Controlled Parking Zone was postponed by the Mayor while negotiations were meant to be taking place with the hospital.

Councillor Charlwood's question to the Cabinet Member for Transport Chris Lewis says:

"Following the Postponement of the Shiphay Controlled Parking Zone until September 2010, it was said that talks would take place between the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Chris Lewis and Torbay Hospital to find answers to alleviate the Shiphay residents car parking /congestion problems.

What talks have the Mayor and yourself held with Torbay Hospital to help relieve the car parking problems for Shiphay residents.

What, if any, solutions which will solve the problems that local residents are experiencing have been arrived at?"

Commenting on the question Ward Councillor Colin Charlwood said,

"Residents of Shiphay who live near the hospital have been suffering for years with parking/congestion related problems and they are fed up to the back teeth with it. The Controlled Parking Zone plan was put together based on a long and expensive consultation. On 6th November 2009 the Transport Working Party recommended the scheme be implemented.

Just when we thought action was going to be taken to help ease Shiphay residents' problems using the introduction of the Controlled Parking Zone scheme it was deferred to Cabinet on the 8 December 2009 where it was kicked into touch by the Mayor and Councillor Lewis. It was said at that time they would hold talks with the Hospital Management to find parking solutions to ease the Hospitals impact on nearby residents.

"The subject seems to have gone quiet with no actions coming forward. The residents of Shiphay are still suffering Parking/Congestion problems.

Our residents deserve better treatment than this and Action needs to be Taken."
